Drywall Repair in Irvington

Holes, cracks, water-damaged board and screws that keep working back out. We cut out what is broken, rebuild it on solid backing and finish it to match the wall around it. You get photos of what was behind the surface before we close it up.

What drywall repair covers

Drywall repair is the right call when part of a wall or ceiling is damaged but most of it is still sound. We cut out what is broken, fix the cause when it is in our scope, and rebuild the surface so it blends with the rest of the room. Most rooms do not need new sheets wall to wall.

We take photos before we start, after we open the wall, and when the work is done. Landlords and property managers keep them for their records. Homeowners like seeing that the damage was handled and not just covered over.

What the work includes

Checking under the surface

Before we cut anything, we press around the damage and probe the edges. Crumbling gypsum, damp paper facing or a loose stud each need a different fix, so we sort that out first.

Cutting out weak board

Soft or broken drywall comes out until we hit firm material. Mudding over weak board is the main reason repairs crack again a few months later.

Backing and a matched piece

Bigger openings get wood blocking so the new piece has something solid to screw into. We match the thickness of the board already on the wall so the surface stays flat.

Tape, mud and sanding

Joints get taped, then several coats of joint compound, each one dry before the next. Sanding spreads the edges out wide so no raised square shows under a lamp.

Texture matching

Textured walls and ceilings get matched as closely as we can before primer. Smooth walls get a skim pass so the patch does not look flatter than the rest.

Primer and cleanup

The repair is primed and ready for paint. If you have leftover color, we can do a paint touch-up. Floors and furniture stay covered, and we leave a clean work area.

Signs your drywall needs repair

  • Doorknob and furniture holes

A door with no stop or a dresser pushed into the wall can break right through. Leave it, and the edges crumble as people bump it.

  • Stains or soft spots

A brown ring usually means water got in at some point. After the leak is fixed, wet board should come out. It stays weak and can hold moisture.

  • Cracks off door and window corners

These diagonal lines show up where framing shifts a little, from settling or from dry winter heat followed by humid summers. Putty alone will not hold. We tape them and finish over the tape.

  • Screw and nail pops

A row of small round bumps means fasteners are backing out. We drive new screws beside them and refinish each spot.

  • Loose or bubbled tape

Long lines of lifting tape mean the seam was not bedded in enough mud the first time. We strip the bad tape and redo the joint.

How a repair day goes

  1. 1

    Start with a call

Describe the damage and which room it is in. We set a time to come out, look it over and explain the fix we would suggest.

  2. 2

    Set up the room

Drop cloths go down, furniture near the wall gets moved or covered, and we keep the dust to a small corner of your home.

  3. 3

    Open up and rebuild

We cut out the damaged section and document what is behind it. Then blocking goes in, the new piece goes up and taping starts.

  4. 4

    Coats and sanding

Compound has to dry between coats. Larger repairs can take more than one visit, and you hear that from us on day one.

  5. 5

    Prime and clean

We prime the patch, vacuum and wipe down. You get the full set of before, during and after shots.

What moves the cost

We price each repair after we see it, and we explain what is behind the number. If opening the wall turns up something unexpected, we stop, show you the photo and talk it over before doing more.

Size and number of spots
A single hole by a doorknob is quick. Damage in several rooms means more material and more drying time.
What is inside the wall
Wet insulation, missing blocking or a cracked stud adds work. Nobody knows for sure until the wall is open.
Ceiling or wall
Overhead work is slower and needs ladders or staging, more so on high or sloped ceilings.
Texture and finish
Matching an old texture, or getting a smooth wall right under bright window light, takes extra coats.
Stairwells, closets and crowded rooms
Getting a ladder into a stairwell or clearing a packed bedroom adds setup time before any mud goes on.

Drywall repair questions

Something not covered here? (973) 447-8743

Will the patch show after it is painted?

In most cases, no. We spread the compound well past the edges of the repair and match any texture, so the transition is hard to find. On very old walls, low light from the side can still pick up a faint difference, and we say so before we start.

Can you fix the leak that stained my ceiling?

No. We repair the drywall once the source has been fixed by someone else. If the stain is still damp, get the leak handled first so new board does not get soaked again. When it is dry, we cut out and replace the damaged section.

Do I have to repaint the whole wall?

Not always. We prime the repair, and with your leftover paint we can do a paint touch-up. Older paint fades, so a touch-up may show a little, and we will tell you that before you decide.

How long does a repair take?

Small holes and cracks often get done in one visit. Larger areas need each coat of compound to dry, so plan on two or more trips. We lay out the schedule once we have seen the damage.

Why document every step?

Once a wall is closed, nobody can see what went on inside it. Our photos show the damage, the blocking and the finished surface. Landlords and property managers often keep them with unit records.

Do you work outside Irvington?

Yes. We also take drywall repair jobs in nearby towns including Hillside, Union, Maplewood and East Orange.
